ARTIST STATEMENT

I create works across various media that explore my queer identity and the inner child. My works often take up various forms in combination with one another such as photographic self-portraiture, sound performance, and data manipulated art. I define my work as "trans-trans-media”, trans as in a translation of information across mediums and trans as in a reflection of my transgender identity.

Often subjects for my works are found in my own personal archives. I comb through archives of family video tapes, audio cassettes, and photos taken by disposable 35mm cameras in pursuit of analyzing the world of my past. I then continue to add to the archive by creating news works but also by creating remixes of the archive itself. My interactions with my archive often bring me face to face with my childhood self. I then begin to play in tandem with my younger self.

Play as a method for archival and personal exploration pervades my work. Play is not an activity of being merely childish, but a mode that allows chance in combination with instinct to satisfy curiosity in even the most mature individuals. Play has allowed chances for me as a queer to artist to experiment with gender as expressed by visual and aural means. Through my work, my inner child has come out to play with noise, glitch, and performance.
